I absolutely LOVED this book! I couldn’t put it down!!! The main character Aspen is feisty, smart yet humble, and very relatable. As a reader, I cared about her and her journey from the get-go. The Elementalist culture depicted in the story is fantastical and very well-fleshed out. It’s science fiction without being tooooooo science fiction-y (in other words, it was complex without being over-my-head. Very appealing to those of us who don’t frequent the science fiction genre religiously).
I can’t WAIT for the second book!!!!!

So alluring and exciting – I finished it in one day! As a fantasy, sci-fi, and dare I say, thriller fan, I am absolutely in love with this book! I couldn’t put it down! All the characters are rich and engaging with unique personalities, which I think can be hard to pull off in a first person narrative. The details are exquisite and it felt like I was creating my own very vivid movie as I was reading. Very easy to get lost in the story – I had to finish it in one day! Excellent, excellent, excellent! I couldn’t recommend it enough!

This story is riveting, it kept me on the edge is my seat and I couldn’t put it down! The author does very well with engaging characters and the story moves in such a fluid motion that invites the reader to ‘step into’ and become part of the journey, laughing, crying and experiencing the moments along side them. I really enjoyed this book and am anxiously waiting to see how this story continues.

This was one of those rare books that I just could not put down. The story was beautifully told and the pace was perfect. The world Rener develops is intoxicating and vivid – I was sad to leave it when I finished the story. The story is romantic, suspenseful and very interesting – the brilliance and science that root the magic to reality make it feel so possible and so real. I cannot recommend this book more!

I cannot put this book down. It hooked me from the start. Great characters, exciting story, well written, well edited. An amazing first book. The book begins in present time Colorado, but there are hints it will spread though the world and time. Magic, supernatural things are happening, but the dialog and scenes are so realistic. The description and vocabulary are rich. This is quality fiction that is a delight to read.

I am obsessed. Finished the first read, I’m about to re-read until I can read the next book!!

I LOVE this story! Authors that know how to create the type of magical world you dream you could be a part of are my favorite, and that’s exactly what Rachel Rener did in The Lightning Conjurer. This book sucked me right in and I could not stop reading. I hated getting to the end because I didn’t want the story to stop. I’m anxiously awaiting the next book to find out how Aspen’s life evolves. Highly recommend!

I am very happy with the quality of the narrative and the overall “feel” of the book. Excellent character descriptions and evolution. The “power” written about is well thought out and is not only fun but fascinating.
Hard to put this book down…

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot is well constructed, the language is exceptionally descriptive. Definitely a page turner…I was very surprised to learn that this is the author’s first book. She writes like a seasoned NYT best-selling author. Would for sure recommend, to sci-fi and non-sci-fi fans alike!

What a fabulous book! I can’t wait to see what happens with Aspen!! Hurry up and write more PLEASE!!

High school English teacher here. I just finished TLC. It’s a feat! Compelling story! Compelling characters! From beginning to end, I cared about Aspen, the main character, and her story pulled me along all the way to the end. A great read! I can’t wait to see what happens next! Thank you, Rachel Rener!

Rachel Rener’s writing is witty, thoughtful, dramatic and funny. This is a story that wants to be on the big screen. It’s magical and real at the same time.

What a truly breath-taking novel from an outstanding author! This book is one that you will not want to put down, and leaves you wanting more. Perfect balance of humor, intelligence, suspense, sexiness, and wit. Highly recommend for anyone and everyone. A true page turner.

I’m so impressed! I love Ms. Rener’s command of the language, her pacing and her characters – Her excellence at foreshadowing! I was a literature major, I teach English and I love reading, and I cannot state enough how much I love this book.

I usually go about reading as follows:
1) Get into the story.
2) Check how many pages until the chapter is done.
3) Try to get back into the story. Go back two paragraphs because I was reading without registering.
4 ) Sigh and put my bookmark at the start of the next chapter, so I can count down the pages.
5) Reach the end of the chapter and put down the book in relief.
– With TLC I started reading and was immediately enticed. Just kept reading till my eyes or mind got tired. Possibly the first book EVER where I was checking the length of the next chapter only to determine whether I would be able to read one more before I had to go to rehearsal/salsa/bed.
It was that good. It really really was.

I am a die-hard science fiction and fantasy lover, and could not put this book down, until it was finished! Ms. Rener brought a refreshing and creative twist to elemental story telling. Be prepared to fall in love with her protagonists.

Nicely woven storylines – it definitely was a page-turner. I couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for the next installment. When is the movie coming out?

The Lightning Conjurer – The Awakening is the contemporary fantasy story that I’ve been longing for. Meet Aspen, a twenty-something-year-old woman living off the grid without any knowledge of who or what she is. The book is a real page turner and I could hardly put it down. The magical realism in the story transforms the Colorado landscape into a mesmerizing backdrop for Aspen’s journey of self-discovery. Furthermore, I appreciate how the author creates a magical world that still exists within logical boundaries. The clever elements of science (and pseudo-science) kept me enthralled and made for fun table-talk over dinner at our house (without getting overly technical). Seriously, pick up a copy and be transported into the mysterious world of Elementalists.

Just finished the Lightening Conjurer. Rachel is a vary talented wordsmith. I especially love her beautifully descriptive, adult, writing style and vocabulary. Example…”and a small, dark blue pendant around her neck, nearly the exact shade as her peculiarly-colored, heterochromatic eyes. At first glance they both appeared a deep sapphire blue, but a discerning look in just the right light revealed one eye to be just a touch darker than the other – so deep in hue it was nearly purple. They claimed a striking contrast to her pale, porcelain skin and raven black hair,…”. very yummy writing to me.
I look forward to watching her talent grow and the recognition that will certainly come along with it.

OMG! I love this book! I am on chapter 18 after one day of nonstop reading. I don’t even remotely like fantasy! I have never read/seen “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter”, etc. & barely know what they are about. The only reason I keep putting down this book is that I don’t want it to end….. Please publish the next book quickly!!!!

Marloes K.
I ordered the e-book Friday after work and finished it Saturday by lunchtime. Needless to say, I am a fan. How far along is part two?

Melissa E.
I love, LOVE, LOVED this book. Please write the next one quickly!!!

I’m embarrassed to admit that in 23 years I’ve never read an entire book… until now. I loved TLC more than I can say. It read like a movie and it was impossible to feel bored the entire time. I read 400 pages in less than a week! Also can I just say that Aiden is SO SEXY?

George W.
This was a delight to read, and is darn near impossible to put down. I absolutely loved it! The book is very visual. Especially cool are the different Elementalist symbols that characters in the Asterian order have tattooed on their arms. The book goes as far to illustrate these, which was such a bonus, and really made the different characters pop. Can’t wait for the next one!

A fantastic read with perfect character development and excellent pacing. Incredibly difficult to put down.

Admittedly, I (too) rarely find myself reading a truly considerable number of pages in a book in a single sitting. Also, I tend to lean towards the classics rather than new publications. This book by Ms. Rener was an exception to the latter – and turned out to be an exception to the former as well.

Perfectly balancing description and action, the story was enticing from the get-go. (And the last 70-odd pages had me forget all about the world around me.) The author excels at summoning the desired atmosphere in just a couple of sentences, resulting in a smoothly flowing narrative. However, smoothly flowing as it is, it is by no means predictable. The story has credible and relatable characters, who sometimes make you laugh because of the entirely human way they talk and act, without resulting in flat-out comedy. Rarely have I shared every single attitude towards the characters presented with the main character. Masterfully done, in my humble opinion.

Despite the categorization of “young adult” and “women’s fiction”, this not-so-young adult man is very much impressed – and eager to get his hands on the second and third volume of this trilogy.

Mary S.
Compelling story, very well written! Can’t wait to see what else this author has up her sleeve. I read it in just two sittings, it hooked me right away!

Shira M.
This was a fantastic story, extremely engaging. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
